More Than A Fraction envisions contributing to building research, theories, discussions, and education that address as follows:
More Than A Fraction: Based on A True Story (The Book)
Under this vision More Than A Fraction will use the published book More Than A Fraction: Based on A True Story to set a basis for a discussion of why certain events happened, and why the individuals were presented in the way they were presented. The projects also point out important events, actions, and reactions that occur in the book, and their pivotal roles in history and outcomes for the global community. Through funding, More Than A Fraction will continue the work of exploring these events, actions, and reactions to further explore historical importance and community outcomes.
More Than A Fraction: Connecting Africa to African American
Through this vision More Than A Fraction will pursue research and experiential opportunities that set the basis for discussions and literature that traces the migration and the stories of the enslaved community from Africa through the Southeast of the U.S. and beyond, and outlines how the African community was able to hold on to African traditions under new titles that would eventually be all encompassing under the term “African American”. Through funding More Than A Fraction will develop experiential base knowledge through partnerships and collaborations between African and African American history, traditions, and knowledge to develop a cohesive picture.
More Than A Fraction: From Separation to Reunification
Through this vision More Than A Fraction will support research, and develop events and projects that: (1) Traces the migration and the stories of the enslaved community from Africa, through the Southeast United States including Montgomery County, Virginia, and numerous locations after exile and harassments stemming from slavery, emancipation, and the Virginia Black Codes; (2) Discuss locating and educating the descendants of those who were enslaved who were separated during slave trading, or lost during exile and reintroducing them to their history and each other. This includes continuous research expeditions and communal events.
More Than A Fraction: Presenting Displaced History
Through this vision More Than A Fraction will support research, exhibits, and interpretations of the marginalized community (enslaved, indentured, and native) spanning the 17th, 18th, and 19th century for museums exhibits and presentations on African American history. This vision challenges More Than A Fraction to approach these projects outside of the standard Westernized point of view to promote a diversity of thoughts and viewpoints when establishing a cohesive history.
More Than A Fraction: The Center
Through this vision More Than A Fraction will create "The Center". Much like the historical purpose of the Merry Tree (the gathering place of the individuals enslaved on Smithfield and it's sister plantation, "The Center" is a physical location that will house and host the works of the Foundation, and serve as the meeting place for individuals that participate in activities for education, addressing generational trauma, and moving towards reconciliation. Through donations and grants More Than A Fraction strives to acquire this place and revive the tradition of "a meeting place".
